Bilby Health (my own startup)

My role

Co-founder and head of design

Year

Since 2025

Sector

Health technology

The brief

Bilby Health is a health technology startup I co-founded in 2025, with a product lead and a chief medical officer on the team. It gives clinicians a quick way to build a structured treatment plan, and gives patients a clear way to follow it once they leave the room.

The challenge

Consults are short, the information is complex and the stakes are high. Patients hear instructions when they're most vulnerable, and there's rarely time to explain everything. Follow-up instructions were scattered across verbal advice, printed handouts and unstructured emails. Clinicians repeated themselves with every patient, and there was no consistent way to see whether a patient followed the plan.

  • Verbal instructions, given in a short consult
  • Handwritten notes
  • Generic handouts

What I did

I led design across both the clinician platform and the patient app, working with real clinics at every stage.

Research

We interviewed more than 80 clinicians, including GPs, endocrinologists, physiotherapists, obstetricians and gynaecologists, and nurses across solo practices, multi-site clinics and hospitals. We also interviewed patients in chronic condition management, post-operative care and fertility treatment.

Workflow mapping and rapid prototyping

I built service blueprints showing where handovers and follow-up break down, from surgery preparation to pregnancy care, and tested low-fidelity flows in Figma with clinicians every week.

A modular plan builder

Reusable tasks that clinicians can adjust for each patient, with timing, dictation and missed-task alerts, so common steps take a few clicks.

Create a plan

Clinicians start the way that suits them: from a saved template, from scratch, or with an AI-drafted plan they check and edit before anything is sent.

Create a plan screen with three options: generate with AI, create the plan manually, or use saved tasks and templates

A patient app people can follow

A mobile-first checklist that shows what's next rather than everything at once, with plain-language instructions, reminders, and embedded video and documents.

Monitor progress and flag risk

A dashboard of every patient's plan, how many tasks they've completed, and who needs a follow-up, so the clinic can act before a missed step becomes a problem.

The result

Bilby Health is now live and being used by clinics. We ran four rounds of usability testing with clinicians and patients, and each round changed the product. The biggest lesson was that clinicians want structure but won't use anything that slows them down. Patients want guidance, not more information. I bring both lessons to every clinic website I work on.
